How to use this car fuel average calculator

Fill your tank completely and note the odometer reading. Drive as usual, then fill the tank completely again. The distance between the two readings is your distance driven, and the fuel added at the second fill-up is your fuel used. Enter both numbers above and the car fuel average calculator does the rest. Repeat this over 3 to 5 tanks and take the average for the most reliable result.

  • Fuel Average: works out km/L, L/100 km, MPG (US) and MPG (UK), plus cost per distance and CO₂ per km.
  • Trip Fuel Cost: tells you how much fuel and money a journey needs, and splits it between passengers.
  • Unit Converter: switches any fuel economy figure between all five common units.

Fuel average formulas

UnitFormula
km/Ldistance (km) ÷ fuel (L)
L/100 km100 ÷ km/L
MPG (US)km/L × 2.3521
MPG (UK)km/L × 2.8248

Higher km/L or MPG means better efficiency. For L/100 km it is the opposite: a lower number is better.

How to improve your car’s fuel average

  • Keep tyres inflated to the pressure on the door sticker. Low pressure can cut mileage by several percent.
  • Accelerate gently and look ahead so you brake less.
  • Remove roof racks and extra weight you do not need.
  • Avoid long idling, and switch off the engine if you will wait more than a minute.
  • Service the car on time. Clean air filters and fresh oil help the engine run efficiently.
  • Use the air conditioner sensibly at low speed and open the windows instead.

Car fuel average calculator FAQ

What is a car fuel average?

Car fuel average is how far your car travels on a set amount of fuel. It is shown as km/L or MPG in most countries, and as L/100 km in Europe, Canada and Australia.

How do I calculate my car’s fuel average?

Divide the distance driven by the fuel used between two full-tank fill-ups. For example, 450 km on 32 L gives 14.06 km/L. This car fuel average calculator does the maths and converts it to other units.

What is a good fuel average for a car?

For petrol cars, 12 to 16 km/L (28 to 38 MPG US) is good for a sedan, and over 18 km/L is excellent. Larger vehicles score lower, so compare with cars of the same type.

Is the difference between US and UK MPG important?

Yes. A UK gallon is 4.546 litres and a US gallon is 3.785 litres, so the same car shows about 20% higher MPG in UK units. Always check which one a figure uses.

Does this car fuel average calculator work in India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Canada?

Yes. Choose your country at the top and the calculator sets distance, fuel unit, currency and result format for you. Indian, Pakistani and Saudi drivers see km/L first, while Australian and Canadian drivers see L/100 km first.

Can I use this calculator for diesel, LPG or any currency?

Yes. Pick your fuel type for the CO₂ estimate and type any currency symbol. All calculations run in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.
